CORTO.ALTO
"LIVE FROM 435, VOL I-5"
ROLE: Art Direction, Concept, Film, Edit, Animation
TEAM: Justyna Welsh, Cara Hunt, Stevie Cossar, Liam Shortall
THE BRIEF
Corto.alto, a Mercury Prize nominee Glasgow-based jazz collective led by Liam Shortall, embarked on a unique project: releasing a new track every three weeks for a year. This initiative, grounded in the raw, improvisational spirit of Glasgow’s nu-jazz scene, sought to capture the spontaneity and collaborative energy of their recording space in Flat 435 under Creative Direction of Liam Shortall.
My role involved Art Direction, On-Set Direction, Production, Video, Editing, and Animation for the series of releases, culminating in a recorded performance with British jazz icon Soweto Kinch.

THE RESULT
The project successfully delivered a fresh track every three weeks, blending the collective's improvisational essence with raw, intimate visuals. Each release showcased corto.alto's unfiltered, authentic energy, as I captured the musicians in their natural environment, full of noise, creativity, and collaboration. My production work emphasised the informal, honest nature of the sessions, while animations added a dynamic, modern layer to the videos.
The project helped build momentum for the band, contributing to the recognition of their debut album "Bad With Names," which was shortlisted for the 2024 Mercury Prize.
